Introduction to Fan Fiction
Fan fiction, often abbreviated as fanfic, is a type of creative writing that is based on existing characters, settings, and plots from original works such as books, movies, TV shows, and music. The origins of fan fiction can be traced back to early literary pastiches and parodies, but it gained significant momentum with the rise of science fiction fandom in the 20th century. Modern fan fiction proliferated with the advent of the internet, providing a platform for fans to share their stories and expand on beloved universes.
Sub-tags and Classifications of Fan Fiction
Canon Compliant
These stories adhere closely to the original source material's plot, characters, and settings. Writers aim to fill in gaps or explore aspects not covered by the canon.
Alternate Universe (AU)
This sub-tag features stories that place characters in different settings or circumstances than those found in the original work. For example, characters from a fantasy series might be reimagined in a modern urban setting.
Crossover
Crossover fan fiction merges characters, settings, or plot elements from two or more different works. This allows for unique interactions and storylines that wouldn’t be possible in the original universes.
Fix-it Fic
Fix-it fic aims to 'correct' perceived mistakes or unsatisfactory outcomes in the original work. Writers often create alternative endings or plot developments to resolve issues they feel were left inadequately addressed.
Songfic
Songfic incorporates lyrics from songs into the narrative. The music often reflects the mood or themes of the story, adding another layer of emotional depth.
